Oracy

School Vision: Excellence in learning – Investment in Oracy – Strength in Inclusivity

We believe that every child deserves to have a voice and the confidence to use it. Oracy is at the heart of our curriculum. We want our children to become confident, articulate and thoughtful communicators who can express their ideas, listen carefully to others and use spoken language effectively in a range of situations. We recognise that strong oracy skills support children not only in their learning, but also in their relationships, wellbeing and future lives. Through purposeful opportunities to talk, listen, discuss, question, explain and present, we develop children who are confident speakers, active listeners and respectful communicators.

Our children use six 'Talk Tactics' to engage in discussions. Each of these supports our children in identifying the purpose of their contribution. Teachers at Laurel Lane ensure that oracy and opportunities for discussion are present consistently throughout the day, aligning with our school value of collaboration. Our children engage in: debates, role play and drama activities, presentations and performances, as well as performing in class assemblies.
