Supporting Young Carers in our school
At Laurel Lane Primary School, we are committed to supporting the wellbeing, learning and happiness of all pupils, including Young Carers. We recognise that some children and young people may have additional responsibilities at home and may need extra understanding and support during the school day.
Who are Young Carers?
A Young Carer is a young person aged 5-24 years old who helps to look after a family member who may have:
· A physical disability
· A learning disability
· A long-term illness
· Mental health needs
· Issues with drugs or alcohol
This caring role might include helping with practical tasks, providing emotional support, caring for siblings or supporting with communication and daily routines. Many Young Carers do not realise that they are Young Carers and may see their role as “just helping out”.
How to identify a Young Carer
A child may be a Young Carer if they:
· Often appear tired, worried or distracted
· Have difficulty completely work or attending clubs
· Are frequently late or absent from school
· Take on responsibilities that are unusual for their age
· Show maturity beyond their years or concern about family members
Not all Young Carers will show obvious signs, which is why we encourage families and pupils to talk to us if they think a child may be taking on a caring role.
Our Young Carer Leads
Laurel Lane Primary School’s Young Carers leads are:
· Mrs Keenan (Learning Mentor)
· Mrs Rowden (SENCO/Assistant Headteacher)
They are the main points of contact for pupils, parents and staff and work closely with children to ensure they feel supported, listened to and understood. Mrs Keenan and Mrs Rowden are further supported by a team of four more adults who are identified as being part of Laurel Lane’s Young Carers team. If you believe your child may be a Young Carer, or you would like advice or support, please contact either Mrs Keenan or Mrs Rowden through the school office.
How we support Young Carers in school
We offer a range of internal support, which may include:
· Named adults for Young Carers to talk to
· Regular check-ins with emotional support
· Support during transition periods
· Opportunities for Young Carers to share their views and help shape their provision
· Raising awareness through assembly or PSHE lessons
· Enrichment opportunities
Support is always provided sensitively and in partnership with families.
External Support for Young Carers
In addition to support within school, we can help families access external services including:
· Local Young Carers organisations and groups
· Advice, activities and peer support groups
· Support with assessments and referral where appropriate
Working Together
We understand that every family’s situation is different. By working closely with pupils, parents and external agencies, we aim to ensure that Young Carers feel safe, supported and able to enjoy school and achieve their potential.
If you would like more information or have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the school.
