Science

At Laurel Lane our vision is to give children a Science curriculum which enables them to explore and discover the world around them, confidently, so that they have a deeper understanding of the world we live in. All children will be taught about key scientists, develop key knowledge and skills in scientific disciplines which will serve as a foundation for future enquiry.

They will develop a set of attitudes which will promote scientific ways of thinking, including perseverance, objectivity and a recognition of the importance of teamwork - collaboration.

We realise that young children are naturally curious and passionate about learning; we provide a stimulating science curriculum that nurtures children’s natural curiosity at an age appropriate level and in line with the National Curriculum.

Through a hands-on, inquiry-based curriculum and collaborating with their peers - children will come to understand the nature of “scientific method” involving: careful observation, the making and testing of predictions, the design of fair and controlled experiments, the drawing of meaningful conclusions through critical reasoning and the evaluation of evidence.

Our aim is that these stimulating and challenging experiences help children secure and extend their scientific knowledge and vocabulary.  We believe that these opportunities will ensure that our children are confident, life-long learners who will explore the world around them.

At Laurel Lane we are guided by the National Curriculum for Science which aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics
  • develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them
  • are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future
